By most objective standards, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi deserves accolades. There are three decisions of Mrs. Sonia Gandhi that stand out.
(1) Mrs. Sonia Gandhi’s decision to forego the Prime Ministership in 2004. Cynics, of course, state that Mrs. Gandhi had no other option but to forego the Prime Ministership — otherwise, many political parties would not have lent their support to form the government. That claim is somewhat dubious. If Mrs. Gandhi had pushed the issue, I doubt that eventually other parties would not have supported her leadership.
(2) Mrs. Sonia Gandhi has not interfered with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s lead on public policy decisions. She has give him autonomy.
(3) Mrs. Gandhi’s decision to support Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s assessment of the India-US Nuclear agreement (123 agreement) whole-heartedly inspite of serious political downsides to the Congress party and to her own leadership.
By most fair standards, Mrs. Gandhi is displaying high level of public-spiritedness in her political leadership.

I absolutely agree with your view that “Mrs. Gandhi is displaying high level of public-spiritedness in her political leadership.” Her diginified manner and her political correctness certainly deserves accolades.
